What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy is the specific application of yoga tools and practices to address and support individual needs. Yoga practices offered may include asanas (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing practices), mindfulness, mantras, guided meditations and more. Because yoga is a holistic system that seeks to transform imbalances and move toward integration rather than fix symptoms, it can be helpful in addressing a variety of mental and physical health concerns, or building a home practice for transformation or simply to support ongoing health and general wellbeing. Sessions are typically 1 hour long and include some time for checking in and discussion, followed by a mutual collaboration to build a yoga practice based on your needs, some time for reflection and integration, and a reference sheet for continued home practice. Some common health concerns for which yoga therapy has already been researched and proven beneficial include:

  • Chronic pain conditions (e.g. low back pain, pelvic pain, menstrual pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, etc.)

  • Mental health concerns (depression, anxiety, trauma, insomnia, PTSD)

  • Neurological issues (complications from stroke, MS, Parkinson’s disease, or traumatic brain injury)

  • Support for chronic illness (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, COPD, etc)

  • Pregnancy, postpartum recovery, incontinence, prolapse, and general women’s pelvic health
